FAQ

What is music psychotherapy and how does it differ from other types of therapy/counselling?

Music psychotherapy, otherwise known as the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music is a collaborative, client centered approach to counselling that engages the traveller in a particular induction (mindfulness practice) with the intention to relax and induce an altered state of consciousness. This is done to support the person’s ability to release the “busy-ness” of the mind and to deepen awareness and connection to other states of being (physical, emotional, spiritual). By using prescribed classical listeing programs that match and meet the client’s
session goals/needs, the individual is guided to pay attention on purpose to other ways of knowing, spontaneous imagery, and/or connection to self. The music assists the client to focus attention, deepen relaxation response and act as therapeutic tool to process trauma triggers, grief/loss, unresolved inner conflicts, repressed emotions, memories/associations. This modality takes each person on a journey to discharge emotions, facilitate inner healing, increased awareness and access inner resources, gifts and insight in support of change and growth. Each session is customized to the needs of each client in the moment with the intent to address particular therapeutic goals and needs (personal & professional).
